Clinical Applications: Dynamic Digital Radiography

Alveolar Hypoventilation

  • Age 41, Female
  • No abnormality observed in standard image at maximum inspiration
  • Paradoxical motion of diaphragm seen with DDR
  • Abnormal diaphragm motion is not expected in alveolar hypoventilation and may be suggestive of neuromuscular disease
Clinical Applications: Dynamic Digital Radiography

Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease

  • Age 75, Male
  • Hyperinflation, diaphragm flattening, low position of diaphragm on standard image at maximum inspiration
  • Cardiac constriction can be observed
  • Limited and irregular diaphragm motion during expiration phase seen with DDR
Clinical Applications: Dynamic Digital Radiography

Pulmonary Embolism

  • Age 65, Male
  • Pulmonary Embolism (non acute)
  • DDR demonstrates right pulmonary artery dilation
Clinical Applications: Dynamic Digital Radiography

Diaphragmatic Paradox

  • Age 51, Female
  • Moderate pulmonary obstruction and restriction
  • DDR shows diaphragmatic paradox on restricted side on the forced breath
  • Cannot observe with standard X-ray or pulmonary function test
Clinical Applications: Dynamic Digital Radiography

Asbestosis-Related Restriction

  • Age 72, Male
  • Degree of restriction not able to be assessed by standard X-ray
  • Use of DDR increased assessment of severity
Clinical Applications: Dynamic Digital Radiography

Severe Restriction and Obstruction

  • Severe Restriction and Obstruction
  • Female
  • DDR shows pulmonary Langerhans cell histiocytosis in upper lung and air trapping
Clinical Applications: Dynamic Digital Radiography

Severe Restriction and Obstruction with Tumor

  • Age 60, Female
  • Lateral DDR shows paradoxical and diminished motion
